Therianthropy
Therianthropy consists of two separate words: "therion", which means beast and "anthrōpos", which means human.
Therianthropy stands for the identification of ones self as either completely or partly animalistic. Most therians are aware of their human body.
Therianthropy is not a religion. Even though some therians started to build on this idea, it is most widely accepted as a spiritual self-discovery.
There are no rules to follow, in order to be a therian.
Of course people try to find an explaination for therianthropy.
The most basic views are distinguished between spirutal beliefs and psychological reasoning.
Spiritual therians represent the majority of this community. Their believes consider reincarnation or multiple souls as a basic explaination.
Psychological therians refer their theories to scientific studies, which would include Identity disorders or traumatic events.
Therians usually find out about themselves by the awakening, a special event that is considered the first contact to your inner animal (a.k.a. theriotype). The awakening happens only once in your life, but similiar feelings can be achieved by shifting.
Shifting is the ability to get in touch with your theriotype, by taking its mentality as your own. It can be practiced in a form of meditation, but sometimes it happens totally involuntary.
There are many different types of shifting, ranging from increasement of your senses to (controversial) physical transformation.
For example, one popular type of shifting is feeling "phantom limbs", where you are able to feel animal-limbs of your theriotype such as a snout or tail, which of course are not physically there. Your hands and feet could begin to feel like paws, while your skin feels softer because your theriotypes fur.
Some shifting types may occur every single time you shift, while others may be never a part of yours. There can also be several types being present at once.

How do you live with therianthropy?
In question if I'm spiritual or psychological, I'm kind of on both sides. I know I was heavily exposed to a world full of animals from early on in my life, which gave me enough reason to see myself as a part of it. This doesn't explain wolves though. I feel a connection that is simply not "from this world".
After the awakening I have felt and believed that I must be a reincarnation of a wolf named Karn. But that quickly ran into confusion, because I couldn't find a reason why this would happen. It took me some time to realize that what I could see and feel inside myself, was not the picture of a life before mine, but rather a life that is currently living inside of myself, in a world that I contain in my own body. As strange as this sounds, I realized that I am Karn.
Feeling this spiritual body of a wolf in this small physical body of a human is quite arduous over time. Some parts of yours feel missing, others feel misplaced and you are simply stuffed to full extend. This feeling is often described as a "soul being trapped in the wrong body".
To calm my inner desires I adjust my everydays life and behavior, to match those of a wolf.
For instance, most all of my friends call me Karn. This is very important to me and gives me a feeling of acceptance.
Close friends experience wolf-like behavior, noises and gestures, not only in chat, but also reallife. Of course there are certain lines I don't step over, I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable. For example, if I want to lick someones face because I'm happy to see them, I would need to know if it's okay to do so in the first place. Only previous relationships got so far yet. This is one of the reasons why I like to be around dogs, it's normal behavior for them.
Other non-social activities include running in nature or stalking prey (not hunting or killing anything).
I also practice shifting, lucid dreaming and dream interpretation.
Shifting
In order to shift I contentrate on what I really am, feel who I am. I imagine the nature I live in, every part of my real self.
Shifting feels like being enlightened, clear off my human mind. Wild with a huge amount of physical and mental energy.
I feel the heart of a wolf growing in my chest. I feel real.
I practice mostly astral shifting, by listening to music and meditation. I become Karn in another world, where I can move freely on my own. I experience what Karn is up to and this is exactly what I write down on my personal (german) blog.
This shift brings me as far down to my feelings as I possibly can in a concious state of my mind.
When I am outside in nature, I experience mental shifts. My wolf spirit changes place with my common human senses. My conciousness remains, but I see the world differently as before, inhuman you could say. The nature becomes a part of myself and I act appropriate in it. I become very curious and I want to experience every possible thing all at once.
Involuntary mental shifts happen from time to time. They are the most intense shifts I can experience, but also the most dangerous of all. I am extremely loaded with physical energy and my lust for blood is incredibly high. Sometimes I need to shut this shift down by will, or else I might endager myself or others. Yes, it is that strong.
I've experienced phantom shifting only once yet. I felt a tail and it hurt.
The most probable reason why it did, was because I was so unfamiliar with this. Also I sat on it, but I couldn't get to move it into a more comfortable position.

The meaning of the wolf
Mind that I can only speak for myself. There is no basic rule for what each animal means to everyone.
The only truth is, that you would have to find out yourself.
For me, the wolf is an honorable creature with great marks of patience and endurance. It proves courage, it is always loyal and protecting to those he loves. His own strength can only be excelled by the combined strength of the pack.
The wolf is a strong animal, always surviving, fighting to the end, never giving up. Being hurt makes them stronger. Those who suffer, those will lose.
Respect and order is the basement of a wolfs environment. Its freedom may not be questioned.
A wolf is proud.
These are the standards I live with. I follow those rules dearly to make my life worth living.

The human problem
I am completely aware
that my body is in fact human, very functional in all its very complex system.
But I feel different, I don't feel human. I rather feel like this wolf wants to jump out of my heart at any given moment.
My name only fits this shell, but not what is living inside.
There is a term called "species dysphoria", being closely related to "gender dysphoria", or more commonly known as "transsexuality".
I share the same problem about my species, as others do with their gender. Maybe this makes more sense to you.
If there would be a possible surgery to awake as wolf, I would go for it in a heartbeat, but I know just as well as you, that this will never happen.
I do not want anyone to push into thinking and accepting me as a wolf. I don't want you to call me Karn.
I want you to know who I really am.
In the end it is your choice, who I am to you.
